What can you depend upon as you begin your day? Family? Friends? Job? Or, must you start your day lonely, with no human support facing your trials on your own?

“Pardon for sin and a peace that endures, thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide; Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow, blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside.”

Have these words from Thomas Chisholm ever echoed through your mind when things were going great? How about when things are bad?

He knew that his life was a mess. It was unclear to him how it had gotten this way, but the current situation was dire. After waking up again with a hangover, mouth like a lint trap in the clothes dryer, nerves jittery and uncontrollable, he made it to the kitchen for coffee. “I have zero self-control,” he said out loud. It seemed he had these thoughts every day. As a Christian, he knew prayer was the way to address God and ask for help. He wanted to change but he had asked God before and nothing helped. Despondent, feeling defeated he sat in his chair with his coffee and pondered his dismal future.

Ever have those guilt-ridden thoughts?

In the above hymn, the writer states, “Pardon for sin and a peace that endures.” Think about being pardoned every day. The compassion of God is being poured out on you regardless of what you did yesterday. Instilling peace in your soul each morning as you rise. When you think about this do you want to tell the world how blessed you are or sing a song of praise?

The hymnist went on to say, “Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide.” God’s presence in our lives, if we live intentionally, lifts us and provides the lamp unto our feet. Assistance to us as we navigate the perils of life if we consciously turn our lives over to Him. A great way to live each day, with the omnipotent One by our side.

“Strength for today and a bright hope for tomorrow.” This is a fountain of blessings bubbling up in our lives giving us the force and the reason to battle today’s perils. Jesus mentions that His strength will be magnified in our weakness — successful completion of tasks and blessed hope for the future.

“Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside.” We are often reminded of the promises of God. We are encouraged to claim those promises and live our lives in abundance. I don’t know about you but in this day and age, it is easy to become focused on the negative things in our world. Problems are abundant, bad news our daily fare, but if we memorize this song and sing it continually throughout the day, in our head or out loud, I know it will change our outlook. That, in turn, will allow you to focus on the blessings God has graciously provided and your day will be exceptional.

Try it!
